Spotlight: Nicole De Lisle, LVT

On this terrific Tuesday of National Veterinary Technician Week, we are thrilled to spotlight Nicole De Lisle, LVT 🌟 Founder of Shelby’s Gentle Paws Hospice, LLC, currently an LVT at VCA Braelinn Village, and the 2026 SMP Scholarship winner - Nicole has entered the chat:

"I was drawn to veterinary medicine because of my love of animals and science. What has made me stay is not only the patients, but forming trusting client relationships while supporting the human-animal bond.

Throughout my career, I have had experience working with shelter medicine cases, exotics, emergency, and my favorite, internal medicine. I loved the complex work ups and chronic disease management involved with internal medicine cases. This is where I was really able to bond with my patients and their families during their care.

I was hoping to pursue specializing in small animal internal medicine, but a series of personal events changed my path.

In 2023 I lost my father unexpectedly, and shortly afterward my dog Tigerlily. One year later, I lost my heart dog Shelby after a slow decline. I experienced compound and anticipatory grief, as well as career and caregiver burnout. I had to take a step back and take care of myself.

During this time I realized my calling for animal hospice and palliative care. This field involves balancing what we can do medically, while prioritizing comfort and quality of life. I am currently enrolled in the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care program to become a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Technician. I had a lot of knowledge and support during the care of my own pets, and it made me realize I want to be able to offer that to other pet parents. This led me to found Shelby’s Gentle Paws Hospice, LLC, a mobile veterinary nursing service.

What I want to make sure to share with current and future veterinary technicians is that it is ok to ask for help, it is healthy to set boundaries, and it is important to take care of yourself first before you can take care of your patients.

What gets me through a hard day is thinking of the patients and caregivers who I have helped and who have in return touched my heart. They are who make this career worth it.

Take care of yourselves and each other."

Thank you for all that you do Nicole, this world is a better place because you are in it ⭐
